The modern Asian Games began in 1951, but these international games have their roots in
the Far East Championships, a competition primarily between China, Japan and the Philippines
between 1913 and 1934.
11 nations and 489 athletes competed in the first games in 1951 in New Delhi.
The 1994 games in Hiroshima saw 32 countries win medals. The 1998 Games were held in Bangkok,
Thailand in December. The 2002 Games were held in Busan, South Korea.
The games are sanctioned by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

Iran is hoping to upset
Asian Games hosts in football in 2002:
Iran is training hard to
defend its Asian Games Championship from 1998. Iran will have a
difficult path, with the Success of South Korea as World Cup hosts both on
an off the field.
Both South Korea and Iran
have won three Asian Games football championships.

Iran is running for 2007
Asian Winter Games
Iran is bidding to host the Asian Winter
Games in 2007. Representatives of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) will
visit Iran soon to inspect facilities.
