in its allure, the music of 1001 Nights Orchestra evokes images of far
away lands and magical nights.
This world-class Middle Eastern ensemble has received
many distinguished reviews including a Best of Austin Award from the Austin
Chronicle for its live production of an original score to the 1924 silent
movie classic, "The Thief of Bagdad," starring Douglas Fairbanks,
Sr. Expanded from its usual core group for this special occasion, the
10-piece orchestra directed by Kamran Hooshmand was comprised of a mix
of Western and Eastern instruments, each representing a theme or a character
in the movie. The show, conceived and co-produced by Austin's popular
movie theatre, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, garnered fabulous reviews
and received clamorous standing ovations. Staged three times to enthusiastic
sold-out audiences, "The Thief of Bagdad" was a featured show
at South By Southwest 2000. Since the project was so well received in
Austin, 1001 Nights is considering taking it on the road nationally.
